The three lists below are ferns that have survived or died in the Greta Risse Shade Garden at the University of Alaska Fairbanks Georgeson Botanical Garden. Plants are grown for at least five years, and annual data are recorded on survival, growth characteristics, ornamental potential and ability to vegetatively reproduce or produce spores. Plants are grown in Fairbanks silt loan soil on a south-facing slope. Soils have been amended with organic matter since at least 1910. Plants grow beneath a lattice shade house that provides approximately 40% shade. The plants are fertilized annually, hand weeded, and irrigated as needed. More complete descriptive data will be available on the perennial trial site. |
